The last month has been one of adjustments and changes.  Families, schools and businesses have all felt the effects of social distancing.  One place that has also had to make adjustments in favor of safety is Colton Assisted Living.

Michelle Wagner is helping make the transition to lockdown a little smoother for her residents.  “When I first broke the news to them that we were going into lockdown mode, they were very confused and upset,” explained Wagner. “It was very tough for some residents to accept the fact that they wouldn›t be seeing their loved ones for a long time.

”Thankfully, the residents are able to communicate with their family and friends through phone and text at any time, making this time apart a little easier.  Residents are also keeping up with the latest news, which helps them understand the pandemic.

Two regular activities of great importance to the residents of Colton Assisted Living are ones that are no longer taking place at this time.

“I will say the most difficult announcements I had to make was when I relayed the news that there would be no church services here and our beautician, Rita, would not be able to come in to the facility until further notice,” said Wagner.

The residents, families, community members and staff understand that this temporary situation is solely for the safety of residents and staff.

Wagner loves to see the residents smile.  She surprises them with treats to keep spirits up and to help bring some daily joy.

“I have spoiled them with different ice cream treats, pop, candy and we even enjoyed Pizza Ranch pizza for lunch the other day.  We also sent our loved ones “Thinking of You”  cards to brighten their day and to ensure our loved ones that we are hanging in there,” she exclaimed.

They are all especially grateful to the community for their ongoing expressions of generosity and love.

“We have enjoyed all of the cards, drawings, artwork, balloons and treats from the community,” Wagner said. “Thank you so much to everyone that has dropped off goods!  The residents and staff appreciate all that you have done for us during this time!”

The residents are making the best of this time of social distancing and bird watching has become a favorite activity.  Colton Assisted Living only has a few bird feeders and would love to add more.  Wagner has priced bird feeders, stands and bird feed, and unfortunately, it is not in their budget at this time.  The residents also love the perennials and seeing the flowers bloom each spring.

“If you’ve noticed, our bushes, flowers and perennials around the building could use a little help,” said Wagner. “I would love it if we could have a few green thumbs come to the facility when it gets nice out and help us spruce up the facility grounds for our residents to enjoy.”

They could also use donations of bushes, perennials and flowers.  If anyone is interested in helping the residents of Colton Assisted Living with these needs, please contact Michelle Wagner at 605-446-3603.

Another bright spot is finding the surprises left in a red bin in the front entryway of the facility.  Members of the  community are able to drop off things like cards, drawings and artwork.  It is checked throughout the day and everything is sprayed with disinfectant and held for 24 hours before being given to the residents.  They ask that you please do not leave baked goods at this time, but pre-wrapped candy and treats are acceptable.

“I would like to thank family, friends and the Colton community for being so understanding and supportive of our residents during this time,” added Wagner.  “The staff and I will continue to give our residents the love and care they all deserve, comfort them as we all fear the unknown and continue to create safe, fun activities to keep their minds at ease.  We will do what we can to make sure the outside world stays outside as we strive to keep our elders safe inside. We are making the best of the situation and praying that we all stay healthy during this time.”
