August 30

Humboldt

Eileen was born December 22, 1930, to Ralph and Edna (Pipgras) Kelley, on a farm north of Hartford. Eileen graduated from school in Humboldt in 1947. On December 19, 1947, two legends were united in marriage when Eileen married Garlin in Canton. In 1952, the couple moved to Humboldt. Over the years, Eileen wore many hats as she waitressed at West Sioux roller rink, as well as the Sweet Shop Cafe, taught school in Humboldt, and was top-seller for Fuller Brush. After retiring, she began babysitting and welcomed kids into her home for over 22 years.

Eileen lived her life with a strong intention to enrich the lives of others. She successfully accomplished this through many avenues including being a member of Ladies Aid, teaching Sunday School for 26 years, teaching Bible School for 31 years, organizing the annual church dinner for 15 years, entertaining residents at surrounding nursing homes with her daughters as they sang and played the piano for over 25 years, hosted many family gatherings where countless games of cards and blotto were played, and last but most definitely not least, her pancakes.

Eileen was a dedicated daughter, wonderful wife, marvelous mother, first-rate friend, and known as Grandma Meyer to the majority of the tri-state area. She had love in her heart, a sparkle in her eye, a joy for life in her smile, and overflowing faith in her soul. Eileen’s life will continue to be celebrated by her daughters, Nyla Grave of Sioux Falls and Lana Ahlquist of Canistota; her son, Craig (Laurie) Meyer of Minnesota; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughters, Deanna Hanisch and Gloria Sieverding; four great-grandchildren; and sons-in law, Ron Grave, Lewis Hanisch and Ed Ahlquist.

Her funeral service was held Thursday, September 3, at Faith Lutheran Church in Humboldt.
