Jim was born on April 4, 1943, in Jamestown, N.D., to Chris and Lois Mitchell. At a young age, he moved with his family to Selby, S.D. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1960. He served in Germany as a truck driver and was honorably discharged in 1963. On August 30, 1974, he married Carol De Jong in Colton and spent his entire life there.
Jim spent over 40 years as a truck driver and logged well over two million miles. He worked for All American, Hyman and Yellow Freight. After his retirement, he worked with JR at Mitchell Construction. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, tinkering with his garden tractors and riding his side by side in the Black Hills. Jim especially loved his dogs.
Survivors include his wife Carol, Colton; sons Paul (Andra) Mitchell, Doland, Jake (Diane Bunker) Mitchell, Colton and JR (Sam) Mitchell, Crooks; grandchildren Brittney (Josh) Mitchell, Paige (Slayton) Mitchell, Tayden Mitchell, Taylor Mitchell and Jesse Mitchell; great-grandchildren: Adelyn Miller, Wrenley Holzman and Jr. Mitchell; and his siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation and prayer service was held on October 24, 2021, at the Minnehaha Funeral Chapel, Colton. Private interment was Monday in the Colton Cemetery.
