Lowell Joseph Huls was born on the farm in Salem on his dad’s birthday March 18, 1931, to Maurice and Agnes (Krantz) Huls. Lowell quit school to help on the farm.
He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. After returning, he worked for Sunshine Foods until 1963. His lifelong dream of owning his own farm became a reality – he bought a farm north of Humboldt. Lowell did a lot of custom work for many farmers besides his own farm. He farmed until 2016 when he unwillingly quit farming due to health reasons. His life was the farm, his horses and buggies and his family.
He was a member of Dakota Harness Club, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Lowell enjoyed fishing, hunting and driving his horses on McCrossan Boys’ Ranch Wagon train. His team of horses were also in many parades.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Gail (Kerry) Hoefert and Patricia Beckman, both of Hartford; son, Thomas (Carrie Hoekman) Huls of Humboldt; grandchildren, Adam (Miranda), Aaron (Ashley), Andrew (Jennifer) Hoefert, Cody (Cody Malik) Beckman, Kylie (fiancé Taylor Hodges) Beckman, Ethan Huls and Bailey (fiancée Tanisha Arnold) Huls; great-grandchildren, Abby Vitek, Lauren, Micah, Blayre, Colt and Cooper Hoefert; brother, Jerry (LaVonne) Huls of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Carol Huls of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
