Commercials, campaigns, slogans and promises are just some of the signs that election time is right around the corner throughout the nation. 

In Minnehaha County, Colton, Crooks, Hartford, Humboldt, Tri-Valley School District and West Central School District all have open seats on their city councils and school boards. 

COLTON

On a local level, petitions are due on Friday, Feb. 28 by 5 p.m. for anyone who wishes to file a petition at the city office. The city council election will be held Tuesday, April 14. 

The following offices will be come vacant due to the expiration of their present term. 

Ward 1 — Three-year term (currently held by Jeff Pedersen)

Ward 1 — Two-year term (currently held by Diann Nesheim)

Ward 2 — Three-year term (currently held by Trevor Bunde)

Ward 3 — Three-year term (currently held by Colby Jensen)

CROOKS 

In Crooks, residents have until Friday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. to turn in their petitions or mail them, with the date and time posted on the envelope. Residents turning in their petitions can do so at 701 S. West Ave., Crooks. The city council election, which would be combined with Tri-Valley School District, has been set for Tuesday, April 14. 

Current vacancies are: 

Ward 1 — Two-year term (currently held by Andy Henning)

Ward 2 — Two-year term (currently held by Jacob Maras)

Ward 2 — One-year term (currently held by Randy Kringen)

HARTFORD

Hartford has three open positions this year, one in each of the three wards. Anyone interested in filing a petition must do so by Friday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m.  A city council election is currently planned for Tuesday, April 14. 

Terms expiring are:

Ward 1 — Two-year term (currently held by Mark Brenneman)

Ward 2 — Two-year term (currently held by Brittany Glanzer)

Ward 3 — Two-year term (currently held by Scott Nelson)

HUMBOLDT

In Humboldt, there are five positions that are up for election this year. The vacancies are due to the expiration of terms. Anyone interested in running, must file their petition before 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at 201 S. Main Street, Humboldt. 

Vacancies are: 

President — Three-year term (currently held by Adam Lund)

Trustee — Two-year term (currently held by Allen Schmeichel)

Trustee — One-year term (currently held by Heather VanZee)

Trustee — One-year term (currently held by Richy Griepp)

Trustee — Two-year term (currently held by Theresa Muth)

TRI-VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Tri-Valley School District has one vacancy on their school board this year. The single, three-year term, currently held by Dan Schlueter, is open. Circulation of petitions are ongoing and must be filed with the business manager at 46450 252nd Street, Colton, before 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. Petitions can also be filed via registered mail with the same deadline. 

Tri-Valley’s election date with run in conjunction with the City of Crooks and is set for Tuesday, April 14. 

WEST CENTRAL 

SCHOOL DISTRICT

Two vacancies will open at the West Central School District this year. Interested parties can begin circulating petitions as of Tuesday, March 3 and must be filed with the business manager at 705 E. 2nd Street, Hartford, no later than Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. Petitions can also be filed via registered mail with the same deadline. 

The vacancies are from Craig Habben and Paula Hawks. 

The school’s election is set for Tuesday, May 12.
