Terry was born on March 3, 1949, to Herman and Ramona (Rempfer) Opp in Mobridge. He grew up in Isabel until moving with his family to Marion in 1960. He graduated from Marion High School in 1967 and attended Northern State in Aberdeen. On November 6, 1968, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam June 1969-June 1970 as a LOH (light observation helicopter) crew chief in the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment.
Terry returned to South Dakota and began working for John Morrell in Sioux Falls. On March 24, 1972, he married Barbara Brown in Mitchell. They settled in Sioux Falls and then moved to an acreage near the city in 1973. Terry medically retired from John Morrell in February of 1986. In 1993, they moved to their current acreage near Baltic. Terry enjoyed playing in dart leagues, fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed boarding horses at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, Baltic; daughter Stefanie (Mark Niffenegger) Opp, Howard, and Tracie (fiancé Tony Inglis), Brandon; grandchildren Kennedy (fiancé Huse Ibrisevic) Jellis, Ross Jellis, Zoey Inglis, and Patty Niffenegger; great grandchildren Melina and Jovani Ibrisevic; brothers Don Opp and Rob Opp, both of Las Vegas; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by parents.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 8, at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Interment at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery near Sioux Falls.
