Wayne Owen Nilsson was born on June 27, 1958, in Sioux Falls to Daryl and Marian (Knutson) Nilsson. Wayne graduated from Washington High school in 1976. Post-graduate education included Southeast Technical Institute and Colorado Technical University.
Wayne served in the Armed Services full-time and part-time for 29 years. He first joined the Marines in 1976 and later served in the Air National Guard and the Army National Guard maintaining jets, communication equipment and cooking. His list of military awards includes the Marine Corps Good Conduct, Small Arms Expert Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with three Devices, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal – Operation Just Cause, Panama, December 1989, just to name a few.
He worked at many different companies which included IBM, Argus Leader and ESI in Sioux Falls. He enjoyed troubleshooting and fixing typewriters, computers, copiers and circuit boards. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, coin collecting and car racing at Hartford Speedway. Wayne’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 23 and his music selections included Amazing Grace, Children of the Heavenly Father and The Old Rugged Cross.
Grateful for sharing his life are his parents, Daryl and Marian Nilsson of Colton; sisters, Patricia (Ray) Thomas of Springfield, Vivian (Ken Hintzeman) Olson of Colton, Raylene and Gary Welzenbach of Sioux Falls, and Delila Silverio Marcial (Santiago) of Hampton, Ga.; and his brother, Charles (Susan) Nilsson of Crystal, Minn.; several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and many other relatives.
A Visitation will be on Friday, September 3, 2021, at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls from 12-2 pm. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Richland Cemetery near Inwood, Iowa.
