The South Dakota State Library announced the recipients of the 21st Century School Library award and among that list receiving an Exemplary Award was West Central High/Middle School Library. The school library is led by teacher-librarian, DaNann Kistler, and supported by administrator, Melinda Jensen.

Each year the South Dakota State Library, which is a division of the South Dakota Department of Education, recognizes school libraries across the state based on their performance in three areas:

Place – School libraries are reviewed to see if they provide a welcoming atmosphere and learning space for students.

Programming – The areas of library study and the resources available for students are reviewed at each school library.

The Professional – Each school librarian is reviewed to determine their professional contributions and classroom involvements.

Kistler stated “All South Dakota school librarians are encouraged to apply,” and will be recognized as Effective, Enhanced or Exemplary based on the above categories.

According to the South Dakota State Library, each applicant conducts a self-assessment. They also provide evidence to their library’s ability to meet the South Dakota’s guidelines for school libraries. The award status is valid for a three-year period.

Kistler verified this award was also received in 2017 for West Central.

Kistler has been in the West Central school for 22years which has included 13 years as a classroom teacher and nine years as the District Librarian.

When asked what this award means to her, Kistler said, “It is a huge honor to be recognized by the State Library of South Dakota! Our library team is constantly striving to provide high quality service to our students and staff.” Kistler continued, “I am blessed to have a wonderful assistant, Ms. Alyssa Garreaux, with who this honor is shared.”

“The High/Middle school library has checked out almost 4,000 books to students in the first two months of school,” added Kistler. “We typically check out 10,000 books for the entire year. Our students definitely missed their books during the long break from school!”
