Sioux Falls

April 12, 2021

Ann, daughter of William and Grace Zabel (Colwill), was born May 30, 1929, on a farm outside of Harrisburg. She attended Harrisburg and Shindler grade schools before moving to Sioux Falls in 1943, where she graduated from Washington High School in 1947.

Ann was united in marriage with her best friend, Marvin D. Basche, on June 29, 1947. Together they shared a life of love, laughter and tears that will be forever cherished. Ann and Marv settled in Sioux Falls and were happily married 46 years until his sudden passing in 1993.

Ann worked at Manchester Biscuit Company and Fenn Brothers in Sioux Falls, Manitou Springs Manufacturing Company in Colorado and at the Alaska Engineer Depot in Anchorage. She retired from Morrells in 1992 after 38 years of service in their order department.

Ann enjoyed living in Sioux Falls since 1952, most of those years residing in her beloved apartment where she hosted family meals and holidays. She enjoyed listening to music and meeting her group of friends at the Legion on Friday nights.

Ann cherished her family and friends and shared a special relationship with her neighbors and their dogs. One of her very special bonds was the companionship with her neighbor dog, Oliver.

She will be fondly remembered for her gentle and caring nature, as well as her love for animals, birds and flowers. The value of giving was important to Ann and she was an encouraging and supportive presence to many (especially those of the four-legged variety). Her love and compassion will be treasured and remembered as she will be dearly missed.

Grateful for having shared her life are her very special friends Mike Pierce and Steve Hildebrand; her nieces, Donna Devick (Bill) of Hartford, Cindy Tuttle of Washington and Denise Simon (Bill) of Sioux Falls, along with her niece, Jeanie Huizenga (Dave) of Iowa; her nephews, Butch Huizenga (Donie Raye), Dan Huizenga, Dennis Huizenga (Stacy) and Doug Basche (Rebecca) all of Sioux Falls; Rodney Zabel, Randy Zabel (Mary) and Bart Zabel (Wendy) all of Washington. Her adored great-nieces and nephews, Mary Johnson (Kirk), Tammy Hanson (Brian), Dawn Nelson, Tanya Kruthoff, Toby Huizenga (Patty), Scott Peterson (Pam), Christy Williams (Thane), Nick Simon (Lindsay), Elizabeth Alick (Joe), Sarah Peterson (Justin) and Jon Basche (Maggie). Ann also held a very special place in her heart for her numerous loving great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marv, brother and sister-in-law Glen Zabel (Corky), sister and brother-in-law Jean Huizenga (Frank); three nieces, Evelyn Nelson, Beverly Peterson and Vikki Chick; along with nephews, David Huizenga, Rick Zabel, Chuck Nelson, Glenn Chick and Jerry Peterson.

Ann was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, WELCA, the Humane Society, and Local 304A–Morrells Retirees. She also supported the Zoological Society, Center for Active Generations and the Washington Pavilion. Family and loved one’s sincerely appreciate the caretakers at Canistota Good Samaritan, Ava’s House Hospice and Sanford Hospital, all of whom she was very fond of.

In lieu of flowers, Ann requests that donations be dedicated to the Sioux Falls Humane Society in her honor.

A family graveside service and committal will be held privately at Woodlawn Cemetery Saturday, April 24, with Hope Lutheran Church’s, Vicar Corey Scott, officiating.
