Barbara Butenschoen, 79, of Hartford, died Monday, August 8, at Sanford Centennial Hospice Cottage, following a battle with gallbladder cancer.
Barbara Louise Lind was born on April 30, 1943, the daughter of Lloyd and Marjorie (Gerber) Lind. She grew up at Worthing and then graduated from Worthing High School in 1961.
On July 28, 1961 she was united in marriage to her best friend, Arthur Ray Butenschoen. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter. Barbara worked for Sioux Valley Hospital for the past 29 years, initially in housekeeping and then as a nursing assistant and for the past nine years at the Sanford Hospice Cottages in Sioux Falls.
Barbara was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lennox, where she had been active in WELCA. During their 61 years of marriage, Barbara and Ray enjoyed square dancing with the Shirts and Skirts, Polka dancing and many evenings playing cards with the East 500 Club. The couple also enjoyed working together on the farm they created. Barb enjoyed lending a helping hand while enriching the lives of others, by bringing them together through love and compassion.
Besides her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by brother, Donald Lind, granddaughter, Emily Rensch, brother-in-law, LeRoy Schriever, nephew, Bernhard Lind as well as many other loved family and friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Arthur Ray Butenschoen, Hartford, daughters: Kim Rensch, Worthing and Karrie (Joel) Mueller, Hartford; grandchildren: Heather (Bill) Habben, Samantha (Korey) Relph, Elizabeth (Shane) Caldwell, Josh Mueller, Jessica Mueller and Jolyssa Mueller; great-grandchildren: Lillian and Lukas Relph, Bruce and Gracie Habben and Emilia and Sean Caldwell; brother, Bob (Deloris) Lind, Sioux Falls and sister, Mary Schriever, Sioux Falls and a host of other relatives and friends.
