Emma Husman and her dad, Dennis, recently competed at the NFAA (National Field Archery Association) Indoor Nationals with Emma taking home third place and Dennis bringing home first.
Originally to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, the competition was moved to Yankton, at the NFAA headquarters due to COVID-19, according to Emma.
“They (NFAA) are the largest field archery association in the world and have around 1,000 clubs that people can join with a membership. When going to a tournament, they have a certain set of rules and offer many different divisions for people to shoot in,” Emma said. She continued, “The great thing about these tournaments is that you don’t have to qualify for any of them, even NFAA Indoor Nationals. Anyone is free to go as long as they register for it.”
Not new to the scene, this was Emma’s fifth indoor national tournament, her first back in 2015. This was Dennis’ second national tournament.
The competition was two days long and ranged from 2-4 hours each, Emma explained. Emma competed against 10 other individuals and Dennis competed against 28 individuals.
“We both had very good competition and thought we shot well. Everyone has great sportsmanship and cheers each other on, even if it’s your competition,” Emma said. She continued, “It can be nerve-racking shooting next to the person you are competing against, but everyone goes to have fun, socialize, and meet new people.”
Emma explained they also just competed at the State tournament as well.
“We recently shot state (April 10-11) in Yankton, SD. Both of us got first place and will be taking a break until we start practicing for the outdoor season,” Emma said.
At State, Dennis competed against two individuals and had a total score of 600 111x and Emma shot against one individual with a score of 600 101x.
