Harlan G. Hansum, 78, of Montrose passed away Friday, March 25, at Ava’s House Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services was held at 11 am on Thursday, March 31 at the United Methodist Church in Montrose with visitation one hour prior. Burial followed at 2 pm in the New Holland Cemetery in New Holland. Harlan Hansum was born September 20, 1943 to Adrian and Genevieve (VanZee) Hansum. He graduated from Dakota Christian school and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Dordt University. He taught 7th and 8th grade science in the West Central school district for over 30 years. He also raised cattle and operated an exterior contract painting business.
Harlan was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed all things outdoors. He was born with a shotgun in one hand and a fishing rod in the other. His favorite motto was “Pretty boats don’t catch fish”.
Harlan is survived by: his wife, Marilyn of Montrose, her children Julie Rae of Lennox. Tammy and David DeJong of Rapid City, and Jeff Lindstrom of Sioux Falls; his son, Heath and DeAnn of Lewisburg, PA; his sister, Sheryl VanderPol and husband Tom Nestvold of Plymouth, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Carolyn Hansum as well as Marilyn’s son Gary Lindstrom. In lieu of memorials, donations will be accepted for the Take a Kid Fishing program at the McCook County Wildlife Club.
