For the first year, students at Tri-Valley got the learn a little more about each other and their culture during a “Celebration of Cultures” according to the Student Council Advisor Amber Fluth.
Mrs. Fluth explained the idea came through the students and parents in the Diversity Council. “Lussi (student) really pushed for it to get going. Without Lussi’s enthusiasm and Mr. McDonald’s (Principal), the day would have never gotten off the ground,” Mrs. Fluth said.
The students in each advisory group were encouraged to choose a culture and present on it, Mrs. Fluth further explained. “We had 16 different rooms representing 16 different cultures present. The students were encouraged to teach about dance, dress, music, games, decorations, food and traditions,” Mrs. Fluth said.
She continued to explain that any student could sign up to present on their culture. Mrs. Fluth said, “We had Ethiopia, Tanzania, The People’s Republic of Congo, Germany, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Eritrea, Somolia, Ireland and more!”
“Students were excited to try out various dances and traditional children’s games. Many students wore traditional dress so the various styles and fabrics were cool to see too,” Mrs. Fluth said. She continued, “It was awesome to understand where other people come from.”
Lussi Nirema, Tri-Valley Junior, who helped organize the “Celebration of Cultures,” presented on her culture as well. She indicated while presenting on her culture, she presented hers is made of dances, songs, stories and legends.
“I am happy to say that I came up with the idea of a culture celebration and I organized as much as I could with everyone else who was presenting,” Nirema said. She continued, “I loved everything that happened on the day of the celebration and I know everyone else did to. I would 100% do this again and I hope the school makes room for this event again as well next year.”
