The Tri-Valley FFA Chapter recently had their first “plot” day working with Wyffels Seeds that took place northeast of Colton, according to Tri-Valley FFA Advisor Sarah VanDerVliet.
“A plot is where different varieties of corn or beans are planted. Anyone can stop by and view how the crops are growing,” VanDerVliet explained. “At harvest they bring out weigh wagons and test and see how many bushels per acre each variety did. When my students went out there, we learned how to calculate and estimate the corn yields,” she continued.
VanDerVliet explained she took her Intro to Ag students for the plot day which was a total of 26 students, include five FFA members that participated in putting up signs for each variety in the plot over the summer.
“My students loved it!” VanDerVliet said. She concluded, “Loved the hands-on interaction and the yield challenge.”
