The members of the West Central School Board earned a Silver Level award for their dedication to enhancing their knowledge of school board work during their 2020-21 school year, according to a press release from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota (ASBSD).
The press release further explained the West Central School Board, currently with five board members, earned said award for their participation in the ASBSD’s board recognition program: ALL, which stands for Act, Learn, Lead.
School Board President Alison McGillivray explained, “You earn the award by participating in ASBSD activities, training opportunities and showing leadership at the local state and national level. The points are totaled throughout the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30th).”
There are three levels of awards, McGillivray explained, which are Gold, Silver and Bronze. According to the press release, this was the fifth year of the program. More than half of the public school boards in South Dakota, out of 77 school boards, received an ALL award, which is the most in the program’s history. The West Central School Board earned the Silver Level award by accumulating 350 or more ALL points.
According to McGillivray, last year the school board received their points with a variety of training. Several board members attended the ASBSD Annual Convention, and receiving points for attending training opportunities such as School Law Webinars, New School Board Member Workshop, School Board U Sundays webinars and Wednesdays with Wade meeting/webinars.
The school board received their plaque this fall to showcase their work from the 2020-21 school year.
“We were happy and surprised to receive the award,” McGrillvray said. “The ASBSD has great opportunities for board members to expand their knowledge and learn more about the role of being a school board member.”
