Athena Drobny slipped away from us peacefully on August, 21, 2021. Athena was born on December 13, 1961, in Billings, Mont., to Edwin and Arlene Buchfink of Hardin, Mont. Athena’s family moved frequently and she attended many different schools.
She graduated from Hardin High School in 1980, the same year Mt. St. Helen’s erupted. She told many stories of how her graduation celebration was cut short due to ash fallout. She graduated from UNLV in 1982 with a B.S. in Journalism. She was a proud enrolled member of the Little Shell Chippewa Cree Tribe.
Athena was Front Desk Manager at Rock Creek Resort in Red Lodge where she met her future husband, Daniel Drobny. They were married on June 17, 1997, in Deadwood. Athena also worked as an Art Consultant with the Kevin Red Star Gallery. She was a Personal Care Attendant providing geriatric nursing care for the elderly. She most recently put these skills to the test in caring for her mother the past several years. Athena was known for having a loving, generous heart. Although her family was also the first priority in her life, if someone was in need, Athena was there to help in any way she could. She enjoyed watching classic movies, traveling, the outdoors, gardening, entertaining, cooking and her dogs. Anyone that had a meal or dessert made by Athena raved about it and was always eager for more.
She was looking forward to celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary next year with a return trip to Ireland. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Daniel of Red Lodge; her son Cord Prunty of Bozeman; her mother, Arlene Buchfink and her dogs, Brutus, Maggie May, Kali and Baru all of Red Lodge.
She was preceded by her father, Edwin Buchfink; two brothers, Eddie, Jr. and Christ; two sisters, Georgean and Holly and her beloved dogs, Lila May, Tally, KiKi Dee and Grand Dog – Beauvice.
There was a celebration of Athena’s life on September 10, 2021, at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Red Lodge. In lieu of flowers, Athena’s dogs would appreciate that a donation in her name be made to an animal shelter of your choosing.
Arrangements were provided by Smith Funeral Chapels.
