With their opening of their newest business Reliabank under their belt, the City of Colton is now gearing up for what’s next in their community.
Mayor Rick Lehman explained with new South Dakota law, the city of Colton passed to have the one required license for a medical cannabis dispensary business in their community. He further explained in order to have the ordinance passed, the city had to have their zoning determined with regards to where the churches, daycares, etc., were located in order to know where said business could be located. This means that any business that comes to town for this would essentially be in the area of downtown.
In addition, the city council could be looking at some possible changes this spring with several council terms coming up in April. Those terms that are up for election in April are Mayor Rick Lehman, Alderman Ward 1 Diann Nesheim and Alderman Ward 2 Riley Amundson along with one spot currently open.
The city of Colton is also getting ready for their summer months with regards to their pool opening and the much-anticipated Colton Country Days. Finance Officer Heather Madison and Mayor Lehman explained the city of Colton is currently looking to hire for summer jobs at their pool. According to Madison, they are looking to hire for lifeguards and concessions employees which would also be for their baseball concessions as well.
Mayor Lehman added they are finalizing the details as to what the starting wage would be for employees for the pool. Madison explained, “We are looking for a comfortable number which would be about eight lifeguards but we would always take more since there is always vacations or basketball, baseball or softball. We always like to be flexible since we want kids to get to be kids.”
According to Mayor Lehman and Madison, Colton Country Days will also be hosting another fundraiser this month for the upcoming July 22-24 summer extravaganza. The family-friendly BINGO fundraiser will be held at TJz Bar & Restaurant from 7-10 pm on January 21.
For those interested in applying for a summer job with the city of Colton or have questions, please contact Heather Madison at the city office at 605-446-3811 or visit their website at https://coltonsd.govoffice3.com.
According to Madison, petitions can begin to be circulated on January 28 for those interested in running for a city council position and must be returned to the finance officer no later than February 25 by 5 pm in order to be on the ballot.
