Sioux Falls

Evelyn Marie Engelson was born on March 12, 1923, in Andover, to Carl and Marie A. (Kuep) Engelson. She received her education in Webster, graduating from Webster High School in 1942. Following high school, Evelyn made her home in Sioux Falls where she worked at John Morrell and Company. Upon the outbreak of WWII, Evelyn helped the war effort as a welder in the shipyards of Washington.

Evelyn was united in marriage with Kenneth William Nelson on July 3, 1948, in Aberdeen. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls and were blessed with three children, Charles, Sharon and Rodger. 

Evelyn was a hard worker, always working multiple jobs. She was an excellent baker and spent over 25 years in the bakery department of Sunshine Foods, retiring in 1988. Evelyn was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always made it a point to attend all of their activities. She enjoyed playing card games and bingo, cheering on the Minnesota Twins, baking cookies, and above all spending time with her family. 

Grateful for having shared her life are three children, Charles Nelson and his wife, Debbie, Hartford, Sharon Peterson, Sioux Falls, and Rodger Nelson and his wife, Vicki, Chancellor; six grandchildren, Brad Nelson and his wife, Kristen, Jodi Nelson, Jennifer Gale, Angela Cowles and her husband, Kirby, Paige Menke and her husband, Mitchell, and Chelsie Nock; seven great-grandchildren, Kali and Shaw Nelson, June Gale, Creighton Cowles, Burkelyn Cowles, Riane and Nevaeh Menke; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.       

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Marie Engelson; son-in-law, Tim Peterson; five brothers, Bill, George, Harlan, Glen Thuernau, and Carl Engelson Jr.; four sisters, Anita Wolfgang, Marcella Honey, Lorna Charlot and Donna Gries.

Funeral services were held September 10 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
