Bryon Shumaker grew up around Fire and EMS thanks to his father who was a 40-plus year member of the Humboldt Fire and Ambulance. His father, who was a former Chief and one of the founders of the ambulance service in Humboldt, helped build Shumaker’s passion for emergency services.
“I then became a firefighter and EMT with Humboldt. Kelly Boysen learned I had moved to Hartford and encouraged me to join Hartford Fire,” Shumaker said. Shumaker joined Hartford Area Fire and Rescue (HAFR) in December of 2009.
Shumaker originally became a certified firefighter in 1992 and an EMT in 1993. While being a part of HAFR, Shumaker was the 2nd Assistant Fire Chief in 2010 and 2012, was 1st Assistant Fire Chief in 2013 and was Chief during the years of 2014-2020.
Outside of his volunteer work at HAFR, Shumaker works at Rosenbauer Truck sales with Heiman Fire. Shumaker and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Abbi, and two sons, Tyler and Derek.
When Shumaker is not at work or volunteering, he enjoys riding horse, doing home remodel and restoring a 1975 pickup.
