Ken Vietor passed away at Ava’s Hospice House. Kenneth M. Vietor was born April 30, 1955, in Sioux Falls, to Marlyn and Mary (Moter) Vietor. Ken was proud to grow up in West Sioux Falls and began his education at Jane Addams Elementary School. He graduated from Washington High School in 1973 and attended Augustana College.
Ken was a loving husband to Sandra (Fillaus), marrying on December 28, 1979. In 1993, they welcomed Cole Kenneth, and together the family has enjoyed many years of travel and adventure, including ski trips, concerts and professional sporting events.
In 1976, he began working at H.S. Price Company and achieved top national sales awards throughout his tenure. Always entrepreneurial in spirit, Ken later founded the Vista Window & Door Company with his parents. After successfully growing Vista, he sold the company in 1986 and spent several months caring for his beloved dog Gypsy. At this time, Ken also began building a thriving family real estate business.
Friendly and outgoing, Ken’s ability to cultivate relationships and service clients led him to a position with Norwest Bank (later Wells Fargo) for the next 20 years. While there, he consistently demonstrated leadership and always valued his employees and customers. In 2005, he joined CorTrust as manager of the South Minnesota Avenue bank where he remained until a diagnosis of Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease ended his career.
Ken was a music fanatic enjoying all genres. He followed the lives of famous people in all walks of life such as Johnny Carson, Elvis Presley, Muhammed Ali and many others. Also an avid racing fan, Ken drove the six-cylinder No. 77 at Huset’s Speedway and other local tracks.
In addition to Gypsy, Ken’s life was enriched by Jingles, Missy, Charlie, Vail and Riley. With a zest for life, Ken and Sandi have spent the last 42 years nurturing friendships, working hard, playing hard, caring for their family and loving each other every day. They were inseparable. Some favorite adventures through the years included trips to several countries in Europe and countless fun destinations in the United States. Most recently, they also enjoyed traveling to California to spend time with Cole. Ken will always be remembered for his infectious smile and the way he loved life and people.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sandra of Sioux Falls; their son, Cole of San Clemente, Calif.; his father Marlyn of Sioux Falls; aunt Dorthea Prunty of Hartford; brother-in-law Robert Fillaus and his wife Barb of Lincoln, Neb.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ken was preceded in death by his mother Mary (Moter) Vietor and his father and mother-in-law Robert Fillaus, Sr. an d Agnes Fillaus.
Should you choose, Ken’s memory can best be honored by listening to some great songs by your favorite band or reaching out to a friend you haven’t seen for a long time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association of South Dakota.
A Celebration of Life was held October 19, 2021, at First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. In celebration of Ken’s great love of music, his family encouraged others to wear their favorite concert T-shirt or apparel to his memorial service. Rock on, Ken!
