The West Central 9th grade Civics classes received a lesson on the history and folding of the American flag, according to World Geography teacher JoAnne Bohl.
The Humboldt William H. Crippen Post 62 American Legion and the Hartford Post 118 American Legion visited the West Central classes on Friday, October 8. Their lesson included the history of the American flag, etiquette and proper folding of the American flag, Bohl explained.
“The flag lesson was connected with the 9th grade Civics student’s current unit on the American Revolution and Declaration of Independence,” Bohl said.
A presentation on the history of the flag and changes in its appearance was given by Stan Beckstrom while Charles Dubbe provided information to the students on the appropriate flag etiquette. Bohl also explained Erik Edberg and Mark Winter assisted with the demonstration of the proper folding techniques while the symbolism of each fold was explained to the students. After that, Bohl said the students were given time to practice their flag folding skills.
Bohl said, “Our students were great. They were attentive, asked good questions and many were very quick to volunteer to practice folding the flag.”
Student Mya Davidson said, “They did a very good job of teaching us how to respectfully fold and fly the flag.”
