Audrey Anne Matthies was born October 22, 1934, in Canton to Elmer and Gunhild (Severson) Twedt. She moved to the Hartford area as a young girl and later the family moved to Sioux Falls where she attended Sioux Falls schools.

In 1952, Audrey met the love of her life, Duane Matthies, at a dance at the American Legion Hall in Hartford. The two were united in marriage on August 9, 1953. Following a wonderful month-long honeymoon at Niagara Falls, the couple returned to Hartford and began farming south of town. Audrey became a farm wife and a loving mother and homemaker. After the children were grown, she worked for Litton, Sunshine Foods and then began working for the Hartford School district as a teacher’s aide. She retired in 2002.

Audrey and Duane enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. The couple had many favorite trips spanning all over the globe. She always looked forward to the summer months when she could start gardening and then canning. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she cherished time spent with family.

Audrey was a member of the Extension Club, American Legion Auxiliary and a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Hartford.

Happy and friendly, Audrey always had a smile on her face. Her thoughtful and caring spirit will be forever cherished.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Dwane of Hartford; son, Randall Matthies of Hartford; daughter, Jodie (David) Kruciak of Krum, Texas; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Beverly (Bob) Wright, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Lawayne; four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral Services were held December 31 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hartford, with burial at Trinity Church Cemetery.
