Benjamin Goehring, age 22, of Humboldt, South Dakota, passed away unexpectedly on October 18, 2023 from a home explosion due to a gas leak. Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 am Saturday, December 2, 2023, at St. George Catholic Church (408 S Western Ave., Hartford, SD 57033). Visitation was Friday from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm at St. George Catholic Church with a Wake Service and Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm. Arrangements are provided by Miller Funeral Home.
Ben was born on December 22, 2000, to Leland and Lori Goehring of Humboldt. Ben attended West Central High School and graduated with honors. He recently graduated in May 2023 from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD, receiving his Bachelor of Art degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering. Ben received the prestigious “Summa Cum Laude” award for his dedication to striving for excellence in his education. Ben was finishing up extra certifications in preparation to start his career and his life. When asked what Ben wanted to achieve in his career, Ben replied that he wanted to work for a non-profit organization that helped protect children from abuse.
Ben loved the simple things in life whether it be the long walks with his mom, helping his dad on the farm, watching movies with family or his roommates and friends, spending time with his sister, or caring for his animals. He was genuine, a good soul, and made everyone feel like they mattered. This was especially true regarding his family and friends. He enjoyed the quiet life on the farm, but he also had dreams of helping others less fortunate. Ben was a kind, sweet, and honest man, and though he was a rule-follower, he also had a quick, witty sense of humor. He made everyone around him want to be a better person.
Ben was “the Best of the Best.”
He was our “Sonshine”; always was and always will be.
He was taken away from us too soon.
The memories we have will never be enough;
Ben’s sweet smile and laugh will always be on our minds.
Our hearts have a big hole right now.
The overwhelming support from friends, family, and the surrounding communities
has made this nightmare a little less painful.
Ben was deeply loved by many and will be forever missed.
Blessed to have shared his life with Ben are his parents, Leland and Lori Goehring of Humboldt, SD; sister, Hannah Goehring of Scottsdale, AZ; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Ben was preceded in death by many family members.
