Bernice Marie Rubach was born in rural Hartford on November 29, 1923, to parents Phillip and Inez (Main) Johnson of Hartford. She grew up in the Hartford area, attending country school and graduating from Hartford High School. She then furthered her education at Dakota State Teachers College in Madison where she received her teaching certificate.
Bernice taught school at the McLeod School located north of Hartford before marrying Raymond Rubach on May 26, 1946. After marrying Ray, Bernice became a farmer’s wife.
Bernice was an active member of the Hartford United Methodist Church since 1938 and served on many boards. She also taught Sunday School for many years and was active in church circle.
Bernice was an active member of the Hartford Senior Citizens Center and preformed many volunteer projects. Bernice and Ray were some of the first members of Central Valley Golf Course when it was established in town. The couple enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Ariz. just under 20 years.
After retiring from farm life in 1995, Ray and Bernice moved from the farm and built a house outside of Hartford. They eventually sold the house and moved to an apartment in Hartford.
In January 2001, Bernice started taking Karate every Friday morning at the Hartford Senior Citizen Center. She worked her way to earning a Black Belt on December 7, 2007.
Grateful for sharing her life is her sister Betty Lea (Glenn) Kobernusz from Denton, Texas, and many nieces and nephews, too many to mention. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray; parents, Phillip and Inez, and a sister Arline.
Funeral Services were held at Hartford United Methodist Church, Hartford.
