Dean Howard Nelson, age 72, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Crooks, died on Sunday, June 26 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. A prayer service was held on Thursday, June 30, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic. Private interment was held on Friday at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls.
Dean was born on June 9, 1950, to Howard and Donna Jean (Odland) Nelson in Sioux Falls. He grew up in Crooks and attended school in Crooks, Lyons and was part of the first graduating class of Tri-Valley High School. Dean went on to attend the Nettleton Business School and upon graduating did the books for Sioux Falls Paper Co. In 1974, he joined his father and brother Ron in the Nelson Trucking Business. Howard retired in 1994 and the business was sold. Dean went to drive for Metz Baking and continued through changes in the ownership until he retired.
Dean is survived by his siblings: Sandra (Mark) Anderson, Ron (Donna) Nelson, and LuRae (Steve Hawley) Nelson; nephew and godson, Nicholas (fiancé Jennifer) Anderson; niece, Kristin (Dan) Larsen; great niece and nephew, Annika and Aiden Kollis; along with special cousins and a host of friends, old and new.
