Thanks for her love of baking, Tri-Valley second grade students in Ruth-Ann Curriel’s room got to experience some Christmas baking with the high school FACS students.
“I have done this project for the last 20 years with kids in kindergarten for five years (in a different district) and around 15 years at Tri-Valley except for the COVID year,” Curriel said. “I love to bake and know some of the students may not have any experience with making cookies from scratch, then rolling them out and placing the cookie cutter in the dough.”
Curriel continued, “I love to do this for fun; I am so lucky that I can partner with the FACS teacher, Mrs. Strum, and have help from the high school kids. Some of them remember doing this when they were in second grade with me.”
Second graders, along with the high school FACS students, made rolled out cookies in the FACS room in the high school. According to Curriel, a few days after baking the cookies, the students frosted them and were able to eat them at school or take them home.
Curriel was able to do this with the help of a few parents – she and a few parents donated the ingredients for the baking project. The students were able to make four batches of cookies so they were able to bake in four different groups.
“They (students) loved it and had a lot of fun plus they learned how to measure the ingredients and work with older students,” Curriel said.
Curriel also shared the highlight of the project for her was the excitement it brought to the class and the unknown of how this will work. Curriel concluded, “The high school students were great and loved working with them.”
