Craig Wagner was encouraged by Ray Schulte and Bob Lutter to join the Hartford Area Fire and Rescue back in 1995. “They both have taught me a lot throughout my career,” Wagner said.
In 1996, Wagner became a Certified Firefighter and around 2000, he became a Certified EMT. Wagner is also now in his second year as a member at large on the Board of Directors.
Wagner has worked for the City of Hartford for 27 years and is the Public Works Supervisor. He and Doni have six children; Stacy, Ryan, Amanda, Robbie, Dustin and Kelsey. In addition to their six children, they have seven grandchildren and two dogs, Aurora and Brandy.
When he has free time, Wagner enjoys working in his yard and on vehicles, camping, riding his Harley, going to his grandchildren’s activities and spending time with his family.
“A friend of mine, Kendall Ward, a lifelong friend and firefighter for Sioux Falls, joined years ago. I told him he was crazy. Who wants to go into a burning building?” Wagner said. He continued, “I have learned a lot being a firefighter and EMT. I remember the first house fire I went into was with Joe Helvig. I have made many lifelong friends through the department.
