Michelle Shumaker joined the Hartford Area Fire and Rescue (HAFR) in order to help others, explained Shumaker. “I was inspired to join the previous ambulance service after I saw everyone come together at the local ER to save a man who had his leg amputated,” Shumaker said. Barb Thaler visited with Shumaker about joining and encouraged Shumaker to attend the next meeting.
Since being a part of the HAFR, Shumaker has received several certifications such as EMT since March of 2002 along with EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course), CPR and CISD (Critical Incident Stress Debriefing). Shumaker has also been the Secretary and 2nd Assistant EMS Chief while with HAFR.
When she is not busy with HAFR, Shumaker is a transcription supervisor.
Shumaker and her husband, Bryon, have two sons; Tyler who is 23 years old and will be moving soon, and 17-year-old Derek who is a senior this year. During her free time, you can find Shumaker renovating her house, riding horses, attending boys’ events and scrapbooking.
When asked if there was anything else you like the department to know, Shumaker said, “Ask me and I will visit with you.”
