James was born June 7, 1937, in Sioux Falls to Allen and Maurine (Peterson) Oyen. He grew up north of Crooks and attended Trobak Country School and graduated from Lyons High School. He then attended USD, Dakota State and then the University of Oklahoma with a MS in Library. After his education he served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1962. James married Lola Ramociotti on February 3, 1973, in New York.
James worked as a librarian for the Lyons School District in Nevada for 25 years. After his retirement, Lola and James moved back to Crooks before moving into Sioux Falls.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lola, Sioux Falls; Lola’s son, Gary Salaices, Nevada; and a granddaughter, Melissa Salaices, Nevada; brother, Robert (Joann) Oyen, Crooks, a brother-in-law, Robert Sandell, New York; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Janet Sandell.
As per his wishes, no services will be held.
