John J. Bonander, a resident of Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Sanford Ava’s Hospice House at the age of 97.
John J. Bonander was born on September 8, 1926, in Yankton to Arthur and Julia (Evenson) Bonander. He grew up in Brandon and completed school until the 8th grade.
On September 26, 1945, John joined the US Army and served in Korea for two years before being honorably discharged on January 27, 1947.
After returning home from the Army, John assisted his father on a 300-acre dryland farm near Brandon. In 1951, John bought his farm in Hartford where he farmed and raised livestock, including poultry, dairy, and beef cattle. He later purchased a farm near Crooks and farmed there before returning to Hartford, where John continued farming, feeding, and raising cattle.
John enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. He was a member of Benton Lutheran Church at Crooks, SD, and served on the Elevator Board and Church Board.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Irene (Russ) Middlen of Hartford, SD; nieces, Linda (Andy) Hohenhaus of Apple Valley, MN, Julie (Warren) Mohr of Hartford, SD, and Tina Webb-Heres of Wake Forest, NC; nephew, David Webb of Wake Forest, NC; great-niece, Callista Hohenhaus and great-nephews, John (Jennifer) Mohr, Michael (Rhegan) Mohr, Drew Hohenhaus, Christopher (Reanna) Heres, and Donavan Heres; great-great-niece, Christina Heres and great-great-nephews, Jaxton and Jace Mohr; and several other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Julia Bonander; sisters, Helen Bonander and Ardella Webb and her husband Jack; and brothers, Art Jr and Leonard Bonander.
The funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Benton Lutheran Church, 46784 257th Street, Crooks, SD. Interment with military honors will follow at the Benton Lutheran Church Cemetery.
