John Trapp, 87, of Hartford passed away on April 21, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House, in Sioux Falls. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 29 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday with family present and prayer service at 7 pm, also at the church.
John Trapp was born on April 6, 1937, in Humboldt, SD to George and Marie (Kruse) Trapp. He grew up in the Humboldt area and lived there all his life. John went into carpentry with his dad at age 16. On September 14, 1957, John was united in marriage to Susie Chaney. He was also a member of the Air National Guard for 8 years. He was VP of Production at Ronning Enterprises for 25 years. He also worked at Stencil Construction and Scott Gilbert Construction.
John was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church for many years and was a former member of the St. Anns Parish Council and assisted in the design and construction of the St. Ann’s parish hall. Most recently, he was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Hartford.
He was a member of Dakota Harness Club, Humboldt Threshing Bee and Appaloosa horse club. He enjoyed the McCrossan’s Boys Ranch Wagon Train with his wife, children, and grandchildren traveling from Sioux Falls to Prairie Village (near Madison) with his beloved team Nip and Tuck. He participated in many parades and weddings with his covered wagon and buggy. John and Susie lived on their farm, which they called TRA Double P Ranch in which he raised Appaloosa horses, llamas, peacocks, deer and various exotic animals.
He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. His favorite game show was Wheel of Fortune.
He is survived by: his children, Brenda Grogan (Mark Willems) of Madison, Angela Johnson of Oacoma, Bryan (Bonnie) Trapp of Sioux Falls, Debbie (Tom) Kogel of Woodstock, GA, Rick Trapp (Kathy Meyer) of Sarasota, FL, Chad (Laura) Trapp of Belle Fourche, and Valerie (Schneider) Fouche of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Lucas Grogan (Britany Lueras), Lindsay (Eric) Comes, Jeffrey (Lindsay) Branson, Markus (Chelsea) Branson, Chelsea Lewis, Marissa (Caleb) Tilstra, Cody Trapp, Blake Kogel, Tanner (Hannah) Kogel, Rachel Kogel (Scott Kernodle), Taylor Trapp, Tate (Macaela) Trapp, Clark (Crystal) Hoyt, Nikki Hoyt, Levi Hoyt, Shawn Fouche and Vanessa Fouche; great-grandchildren, Emily, Jozlynn, Dylan, Landon, Elliot, Emmy, Skyye, Jaxon, Taylor, Trinity, Shelby, Lainey, Leighton, and Chapman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie, daughter, Paulette, his parents, two brothers, George Jr. “Sonny”, Richard “Dick”, and two sisters, Carol Aronson and Maryann “Mikki” Christensen. www.kinzleyfh.com
