Every spring, Mrs. Kayla Haviland does a weather unit with her Tri-Valley kindergarten class. However, this year, she decided to change it up a bit and added a virtual field trip to the learning experience.
“I have been seeing a lot of places doing virtual field trips due to COVID and reached out to Dakota News Now to see if they would be willing to talk with my students and they were awesome and said of course!”
The virtual field trip took place with Meteorologist Austin Haskins with Dakota News Now and, according to Mrs. Haviland, Haskins spoke with her students about what meteorologists do, a simplified version of how they predict weather, about what the weather was like currently and what it was going to be like.
Mrs. Haviland continued to explain Haskins showed the students around the newsroom during the field trip. “We even were able to watch one of the news anchors record a short clip for T.V. and say hi to him.”
Students were able to ask Haskins questions during the virtual field trip and enjoyed asking questions such as what his favorite weather was, when the weather was going to start being hot, how tornadoes are formed and what the weather will be like tomorrow, Mrs. Haviland said.
“The students thought it was pretty cool. After talking with Austin, some had said, “I have seen him on T.V. before! Cool!” Mrs. Haviland said. She continued, “This was an awesome opportunity that my students wouldn’t have gotten to do without the help of technology!”
