Lillian “Lil” Mary Matthies, 82, of Hartford, SD, died at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls on June 10, 2024.
Lillian Mary Johnson was born January 15, 1942, in Austin, MN to Mary (McKeown) and Charles Johnson. In 1956, they moved to Hartford, SD. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1960. Lil married Lyle Matthies on May 26, 1962, at St. George Catholic Church in Harford, SD.
Lil worked as a secretary/bookkeeper most of her career at Sterner Trucking, Tammen Oil and for the last 20 years at Waterbury’s Heating and Cooling. She retired from Waterbury’s in September 2018 at the young age of 76. However, her biggest job (and most rewarding job) was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved seeing her grandkids and great-grandkids with either a visit or even on Facetime.
Lil was known to worry a bit in her life, and if you had ever been in her kitchen, you knew she always had her police scanner on (and it was loud)! She could have been a weatherman because she would worry about any snow, rain, or ice storm for at least 2 weeks in advance. We all knew not to call her when her “show” was on…the Young and Restless. Lil loved the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and enjoyed going to the dome to see them play on a few occasions. One of her favorite pastimes was going out for lunch on Saturdays. That started with her mom and then continued with her children and grandchildren. Over the past several years, dessert became pretty important, and many times was eaten before her main dish!
Lil was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Hartford American Legion Auxiliary for many years.
Grateful for having shared her life with her are her children, Monica (Scott) Severson of Waverly, Iowa, Brian of Hartford, SD, Mary Jo (David) Vance of Sioux Falls, SD, Barry (Ann) of Hartford, SD, and Jennifer (Joe) Peterson of Hartford, SD; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Erin Lyons) Severson, Ashley (Tanner) Schmidt, Briana (Drew) McCarty, Miranda (Brett) Grevlos, Jacob (Heidi) Fleck, Luke (Avery) Fleck, Trever Peterson, and Jacob Peterson; six great-grandchildren, Bentley and Baylor Schmidt, Finnleigh and Griffin McCarty, and Cecilia and Theo Fleck. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Orville (Shirley) of Chancellor, SD; sisters-in-law, Eileen Johnson and Judy Matthies both of Sioux Falls. She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; daughter, Lyla Rae; parents, Charles and Mary; in-laws, Art and Lillian; and her brother, Mike Johnson.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Miller Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, with a prayer service beginning at 6:00pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am Friday, June 14, 2024, at St George Catholic Church, Hartford, SD, with burial at the St. George Catholic Cemetery, Hartford.
