Richard J. Zimmer, 72 of Sioux Falls passed away unexpectedly at Sioux Falls VA Hospital on Saturday, April 30. A funeral was held at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 5, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Montrose. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. A family burial was held at 2 pm at the SD Veteran’s Cemetery.
Richard was born September 18, 1949 to Leo and Genevieve (Kuborn) Zimmer in Sioux Falls. He grew up in the Montrose area and graduated from Montrose High School in 1967. From 1968 to 1970, he honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He earned many honors for his service including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palms, Sharpshooter (M-14) and a Purple Heart.
On April 9, 1988, he married Linda Carsrud. Rick enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting and spending time with family with many laughs and a few tears. He also liked taking trips to Montana to visit his wife’s family.
Rick is survived by his wife, Linda; a daughter, Jill (Scott) Jorgensen; grandchildren, Darienne Mammenga and Phoenix Ball; great-grandchildren Silas and Shelby; siblings, Sharon (Doug) O’Connel, Jim (Cathy) Zimmer, Kathy (Willis) Gerth, Mark (Carmen) Zimmer, twin sister Rozanne (Rory) Binkerd and Lory (Cliff) Hallem; brothers-in-law, Don (Marcia) Carsrud and Doug (Vicki) Carsrud; and many nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Zimmer and Linda’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Carsrud
